Code of Conduct

Our Standard

Luton Acting Hub is, first and foremost, a drama training organisation.

We welcome actors at every stage—from complete beginners taking their first steps into acting to experienced professional performers.

You don’t need to arrive as a professional actor. We do expect you to approach your training professionally. For us, that means preparation, discipline, punctuality, respect, curiosity and a genuine willingness to work.

Come Prepared

Preparation is an important part of training at LAH.

If you are given a script, scene, monologue or character to prepare in advance, we expect you to make a genuine effort to arrive ready to work. Where you have been asked to learn your lines, please do so to the best of your ability. Read the material, think about your character and arrive having made some initial choices.

We don’t expect perfection. We expect preparation.

The choices you arrive with might be challenged, redirected or completely changed during the session—that’s what training is for. But preparation gives your tutor and, importantly, your scene partner something to work with.

When one actor arrives consistently unprepared, it doesn’t only affect their training. It affects everybody they are working with.

Beginners Are Welcome

If you’re new to acting, don’t be intimidated by our professional standards.

We don’t expect a beginner to already know how to analyse a script, develop a character, understand objectives or prepare in the same way as an experienced actor. We’ll teach you.

What we ask from you is effort, openness, commitment and a willingness to learn.

LAH gives beginners the space and grace to develop while encouraging the professional habits that will serve them throughout their career.

Respect the Room

Acting is collaborative. Everyone deserves the opportunity to work in an environment where they feel respected and able to take creative risks.

When training with LAH, we ask that you:

  • arrive on time and prepared;
  • respect your tutors, scene partners and fellow actors;
  • listen while others are working or receiving direction;
  • keep unnecessary phone use outside training time;
  • remain open to constructive feedback and direction;
  • respect people’s personal and physical boundaries;
  • treat sensitive personal disclosures with discretion;
  • look after the venues and equipment we use;
  • communicate if you’re going to be late or absent; and
  • contribute positively to the room.

Take Creative Risks

LAH is a place to experiment. You are allowed to get things wrong. You are allowed to make a choice that doesn’t work. You are allowed to try something, fail spectacularly and try again.

We want actors to become braver, more instinctive and more capable—and that requires an environment where people aren’t afraid of failure. We therefore expect participants to support rather than ridicule one another when taking creative risks.

Direction & Feedback

Constructive criticism is part of serious actor training.

Our tutors may challenge your choices, identify weaknesses, ask you to try something completely different or push you beyond habits that are keeping your work safe.

Feedback should always have a legitimate training purpose and should never become degrading, discriminatory or deliberately humiliating.

You don’t have to agree with every note immediately. But we encourage you to try the direction and see what happens.

Boundaries & Safety

Acting can involve emotionally challenging material and physical interaction. Participants must respect one another’s personal and professional boundaries.

Unexpected intimate, aggressive or unsafe physical contact is not acceptable. Where scenes involve intimacy, simulated violence or significant physical contact, appropriate boundaries and choreography should be established.

No performance is more important than someone’s safety.

Equality, Bullying & Harassment

LAH is committed to providing an environment free from unlawful discrimination, bullying, harassment and sexual harassment.

We welcome people from different backgrounds, identities and experiences and expect participants to treat one another with dignity and respect.

Serious concerns can be raised with LAH and will be handled under the appropriate safeguarding, complaints or conduct procedures.

Confidentiality

Acting training can require vulnerability. People may draw upon personal experiences or share things about themselves while exploring a character or scene.

Please treat what other participants share with discretion. Do not secretly photograph, film or record LAH sessions or other participants.

Professionalism Goes Beyond the Session

The same basic standards apply to LAH-related WhatsApp groups, events, rehearsals, productions and online interactions.

Professionalism doesn’t mean you can’t have fun, build friendships or be yourself. It means remembering that you are part of a training environment and treating the people around you accordingly.

If Standards Aren’t Met

We understand that people have difficult weeks. Being late once, forgetting a line or struggling with preparation is not automatically a disciplinary matter.

Where standards aren’t being met, our first approach will usually be to communicate, guide and help you improve.

However, repeated lack of preparation, persistent disruption or inappropriate behaviour may result in a warning and, where necessary, removal from a programme or membership. Serious misconduct may result in immediate action.
