SIDE HUSTLE
Flexible paid work that keeps creatives working creatively.
We don’t just want to train artists. We want to help them sustain a life as artists.
Creative careers are often intermittent. A highly skilled professional actor can still experience gaps between paid creative contracts. SIDE HUSTLE is Luton Acting Hub CIC’s actor-facing programme designed to create another potential source of flexible, paid creative work.
We are developing a pool of professional performers who may be considered for paid corporate scenario work delivered through LAH SCENARIOS, our service for organisations.
How it works
TRAIN
Continue developing your craft and professional skills through LAH training, external professional training, coaching, workshops, rehearsals or professional acting work.
DEVELOP
Build the communication, listening, improvisation and performance skills required for professional work.
EARN
Become eligible for consideration for paid SIDE HUSTLE opportunities when suitable LAH SCENARIOS commissions become available.
PROGRESS
Continue pursuing professional acting, theatre, television and film opportunities while having another potential source of creative income between contracts.
What is LAH SCENARIOS?
Through LAH SCENARIOS, businesses commission professional actors to perform realistic workplace situations for training and development. These may involve communication, health and safety, difficult conversations, conflict, psychological safety, customer interactions, leadership and other workplace situations.
When appropriate commissions become available, performers within the SIDE HUSTLE pool may be selected and paid to deliver this work.
Training and eligibility
SIDE HUSTLE is not simply an open casting database. Performers involved in the programme must demonstrate an ongoing commitment to developing their craft and maintaining professional standards.
Actors do not have to pay LAH for classes to access employment. Evidence of continuing professional development may include LAH training, external professional training, coaching, workshops, rehearsals or professional acting work.
Selected performers may be required to complete SIDE HUSTLE preparation or induction for corporate scenario work, which may include:
- scenario and improvisation techniques;
- responding to live direction;
- working with facilitators and understanding learning objectives;
- professional conduct in corporate environments;
- confidentiality and appropriate boundaries; and
- portraying sensitive workplace situations responsibly.
Important to know
Joining the SIDE HUSTLE pool does not guarantee employment. It makes a performer eligible for consideration. Selection will depend on the requirements of each commission, performer suitability and the availability of paid opportunities.
A more sustainable creative ecosystem
Businesses commission LAH SCENARIOS. LAH creates paid opportunities for performers through SIDE HUSTLE. Performers can earn between creative contracts, while commercial income supports Luton Acting Hub CIC in creating more training, employment and community opportunities.
This is part of our ambition to build a more sustainable creative ecosystem in Luton and Bedfordshire.
